Rarely will you see a movie as forgettable as Office Uprising. I mean, I watched the movie last night and luckily took notes as I struggle to remember anything about it. I’m quite certain that they were in an office building and that there was a lot of blood and violence. However, the rest of it is kind of a blur. Come to think of it, I really don’t know should I be recommending you this movie. Ahh, yes, now (checks notes) I remember, the first third is fantastic and there’s a lot of gore. Moreover, it’s a perfect movie for spacing out. Sometimes you just don’t want to be engaged and need something to keep running in the background. Especially if you’re, shall we say, chemically enhanced.
The production values of Office Uprising are quite good and the cinematography has that sleek and appealing vibe about it. If you work in an office building I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of all the little details and jabs at such an environment. And listen to those rules our guy is talking about in the intro. Mostly because he’s quite right about most of them. An additional bonus to this office setting is the energy drinks fetish that I think you’ll find all too familiar. Also, on top of it all, we have the whole weapons manufacturing angle with a lot of jokes based on that. You might wanna check out War Dogs and Deal of the Century if you’re looking for more of that.
Meet Desmond, just another average guy working in the corporate machine. A corporate machine that’s not only manufacturing weapons but also slowly sucking the life out of him. However, Desmond has an escape plan. He’s been working on his indie video game for quite some time now and he’s getting close to finishing it. What he doesn’t know is that soon he will be fighting for his life and just trying to survive, stuck in this huge office building.
The cast of Office Uprising is pretty solid and they were one of the reasons why the movie worked. Brenton Thwaites was excellent as the lead and I don’t know why he’s not getting the recognition he deserves. He started out strong, starring in The Giver, Son of a Gun and Gods of Egypt, and freaking Pirates of the Caribbean. Now, he’s appearing in such B productions as Ghosts of War, but I hope this will change in the future. On the other hand, we have the opportunity to see Zachary Levi also known as Shazam here. His career is blasting off at the moment.
Finally, I just have to mention other movies that use the same concept. A blend of, I wouldn’t say horror per se but graphic violence and office-themed comedy, Bloodsucking Bastards and Mayhem are very similar movies. Out of those three, I would say that Mayhem is the best but that’s just my personal opinion. And while we’re dropping names, I have to mention Not Safe for Work, a great indie thriller also set in a huge office building. Also, I would like to add that if you’re looking for a straight-up horror set in the office building check out The Belko Experiment. This is Office Uprising’s biggest flaw, the silliness that killed any type of suspense or intensity. I just wished they tried to be more realistic because you don’t go into battle holding a plunger.
