Thirteen long years after American Pie demolished the theaters around the world, we’re finally going to wrap up this franchise. American Reunion is a decent comedy worth watching even if for purely nostalgic reasons. All the original cast members are back along with all the memorable characters that made the original movie such a blast. I’m talking about Sherminator, Oz, Heather, and my teen crush Nadia. Ahhh, Nadia, how short, turbulent, and nonexistent was our romance. You can expect the tried and tested formula from the original. And you don’t have to know anything about it to enjoy this one.
American Reunion features a lot of sex jokes, awkward situations, and funny characters. And if you’re familiar with the franchise, you’re surely going to enjoy them even more. I mean, Stifler’s mom and Jim’s dad are going to meet for the first time! If that encounter isn’t worth watching, I don’t know which one is. Moreover, there’s a lot of stuff I don’t want to talk about to not spoil anything. Let’s just say that things are going to heat up. Something I wasn’t expecting after a less-than-average third part of the franchise, American Wedding.
Sheesh and it’s been ten years since we saw that movie, where does the time fly? During that time we also got no less than freaking four spin-off movies. They’re mildly amusing, so if you’re up for a bit of cheap and low-brow entertainment you might want to check them out. They remind me of all those National Lampoon movies that started popping up after the success of Van Wilder. Moving on, despite the somewhat lengthy runtime of one hour and 47 minutes, American Reunion manages to remain interesting throughout. Especially since it expands the original story giving us all the little things we wanted to see. And a healthy amount of nudity.
It’s been long thirteen years since our heroes graduated high school that long and horny summer. Now they’ve all got jobs, wives, and kids, living the classic American life. And almost all of them have moved out. However, after a reunion is announced they’re all going to head back to their hometown. And it’s not going to take long for them to start wreaking havoc and just having fun. The reunion party will be the last thing on their minds as the past is going to hit the hard. In the face and in the nuts.
Did you go to your high school reunion? Believe it or not, mine was exactly one month ago and I did have fun. Almost everyone came and it was nice to chat with old friends and reminisce about the past. And get hammered, of course, I shouldn’t forget about the weed and alcohol. Although I don’t know if will I be visiting the next one, I feel like 20 years is not a good number. Give me thirty or forty and I might think about it. All of this makes me highly suspicious of their claim that this is “the end for the American Pie franchise”.
Just give them twenty years and we’ll be watching American Retirement. If they don’t get the money, it might even be a straight-to-video title American Retirement – Florida Rules. Finally, I just want to add that the sequels are oftentimes overlooked and overshadowed by the originals. And that’s simply not fair. American Reunion, despite heavily building on the legacy of the American Pie, works just as well as a raunchy stand-alone sex comedy aimed squarely at the budding middle-aged guys and girls.
