Three years before The Other Guys, Edgar Wright brought us this gem. Hot Fuzz is a charming and highly entertaining homage to the buddy cop genre. A unique action comedy with an intelligent script, phenomenal cast, and vivacious atmosphere. It’s considered a part of a Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy along with Shaun of the Dead and The World’s End. All three movies are excellent with the first one being my all-time favorite. Oh man, oh man, how did I laugh the first time I saw it. And the same goes for this one too.
Edgar Wright is such a good director. Every shot was perfectly framed with smooth transitions between the scenes and stunning cinematography. Made by a movie fan for movie fans, if you want to break into directing just try to learn as much as you can from Wright. This movie is like the best amusement park ever opened. You just run from one ride to another and after you have seen all there is to see, you start noticing those small details that create a whole new dynamic.
Featuring a frenetic pace, and excellent both slapstick and conversational humor, Hot Fuzz is just an all-around classic. It’s a perfect holiday movie right up there with Die Hard and the rest of them. This brings me to the perhaps best aspect of this movie: action. There will be lots of chase scenes, shootouts, and fights. Moreover, this isn’t a simple spoof, parody, or satire of the classic American buddy-cop action comedy. It’s something much more and it will be that much better if you’re already familiar with the classics of this genre.
Nicholas Angel is a supercop who manages to catch every criminal on the street. However, his colleagues don’t like him so much that he gets transferred to a small town. A small town without much crime. While trying to overcome this culture shock, Nicholas gets a new partner. A partner that’s completely different from him. This odd couple will witness the strange events that are unfolding in this weird and mysterious small community.
The cast of Hot Fuzz is simply stellar. Not only we’ve got the chance to see a gruesome twosome consisting of Pegg and Frost in action but also some of the finest British actors alive today. I won’t go into details as I’m sure you’ll recognize them immediately. With a running time of just under two hours, this is a surprisingly pacey and entertaining movie. Almost all of the story is taking place in this charming and sleepy little town in the British countryside.
Now imagine an American balls-and-cock-out action movie with that setting. The jokes practically write themselves. Slap on top of that a juicy murder mystery and you got yourself one hell of a movie. Finally, I could go on and on talking about every glorious aspect of this movie but it’s best you see it for yourself.
