Scream 2022 Movie Scene Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter and her boyfriend Jack Quaid as Richie talking to David Arquette as Dewey

Scream [2022]

I’ll just come out and say it, the new Scream 2022 is a good slasher movie. It reminded me of The Thing prequel which was also quite good. And it certainly didn’t remind me of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 edition that was just horrific. Again we will be running around with Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, evading the masked killer known as Ghostface. They were quite aware of what they were doing so we will get this “meta-horror experience”. Along the way, they will also eloquently explain how the whole requel, prequel, and sequel thing works.

Scream 2022 is not a masterpiece and it doesn’t need to be. After all, movies like this are supposed to be entertaining and just a little bit scary. Although I have to admit that there were a couple of really gory scenes towards the end that totally surprised me. As someone who has seen a lot of horror movies featuring extreme gore, I don’t remember something as nasty as Sam’s knife scene. And it also features an Easter egg related to the let’s say the bar scene earlier.

Moving on, I still find it hard to watch any Scream movie after the release of Scary Movie. I mean, each time any of the old characters would appear a scene from one of the movies would flash before my eyes. This especially goes for Dewey, pardon me, special officer Doofy. And while the mystery part was quite good I still think that Scream 2022 could have been shorter. Ninety minutes would be perfect as I really felt those additional 15 minutes.

25 years have passed since the infamous Woodsboro massacre. It seems that this sleepy little town has forgotten all about the string of murders that happened so long ago. However, one faithful night, someone wearing the same Ghostface mask appears and strikes again. Now, the whole town is on the edge and the survivors of the first massacre are scared.

With high production values and great special effects, Scream 2022 looks awesome. It’s got that sleek cinematography that we all love so much. The writing is also good along with this air of uncertainty as you try to guess who the killer is. This has been the staple of the genre, a sort of a who-done-it affair that’s especially fun if you’re watching the movie with someone. Luckily, no one was around to hear my false predictions.

The young cast did a terrific job bolstered by experienced actors like Campbell and Cox. If these are going to be the faces we will be seeing in the future then I’m really happy. Melissa Barrera was just as pretty as she was skilled and confident. She reminds me of a younger Nina Dobrev. And I’m sorry we didn’t get to see more of Dylan Minnette and Sonia Ammar. Not that this means anything in terms of what’s going to happen in the movie.

I have to admit that I like this new wave of retro slashers. Freaky, Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight, and especially The Babysitter, are all great and really fun horror movies. They have this vibrant atmosphere and are extremely easy to watch. So, even if you don’t like the genre, it’s not going to be too hard for you to watch one of them. And Scream 2022 edition fits right in this category.
