Triangle Movie 2009 Scene Melissa George as Jess with her arms in the air after someone pointing a shotgun at her

Triangle [2009]

Triangle is a movie that’s very hard to place in a single category. It’s a seamless blend of horror, thriller, and mystery all wrapped into one engaging package. A package that will definitely keep your attention for ninety minutes. And leave you wondering what the fuck just happened at the end. You can try to deconstruct the story and find deeper meaning but you can also watch it without all of that. If you want to learn more about that I recommend you check out this Greek myth but only after you’ve seen the movie.

I just loved the attention to detail and meticulous storytelling that reminded me of Christopher Nolan movies. Did someone say Memento? Although you can also sense a bit of David Lynch. Christopher Smith belongs to a wave of young and perspective British directors, adding a bit of excitement to familiar genres. His previous movies SeveranceBlack Death, and Detour are proof of that. Although I think that this movie is his crowning achievement.

We will be following a group of friends who end up on a strange ship after a storm. As you can probably guess weird shit will soon start happening. However, this is not a straightforward horror movie like Ghost Ship for example but something more complex. The visuals are good and the storytelling tight. Additionally, since most of the story is happening on this huge ship in the middle of the sea you get this claustrophobic feeling during some of the scenes.

Greg is an outgoing fellow who loves the sea. So he invites his friends to spend the weekend on his yacht, enjoying the sun and having a bit of fun. However, they soon run into a huge storm that leaves them capsized. Luckily all of them survived but they’re now in the middle of an ocean without any way to get help. And then they see this huge ship coming towards them. Looks like they’re really lucky. Or are they?

I was going back and forth in my mind about telling you what Triangle is all about eventually deciding to leave you in the dark. This is how I watched the movie, without knowing anything about what was going to happen and I liked it. The cast was good, confidently led by Melissa George and Liam Hemsworth. You can definitely call Triangle a mind-bender because as soon it’s finished you will have the urge to watch it again.

This time fully knowing what’s going to happen and on the lookout for all the little clues. This doesn’t mean that the movie is confusing or anything like that because everything is going to tie in nicely at the end. Finally, I just want to mention this Spanish masterpiece with a title that’s a bit too revealing. If you’re looking to watch a similar movie, I highly recommend you check it out.
