Olympus Has Fallen is in the action section and not in random mainstream crappy movie? What has happened to this site? Well, sometimes you just have to go with the flow and indulge in one or two blockbuster with brainless vomit-inducing story and awesome effects. Not to mention the fact that you get the chance to see Morgan Freeman as the president of USA, for the second time. After a quite dull and below expectations Gamer, Gerard Butler has finally returned as an action star that can get shit done. The rest of the cast was pretty much average with the exception of Melissa Leo, an old Homicide acquaintance… And now, after some fries lets dig into the meat of this movie, spectacular and innovative action scenes. Granted, in between these scenes you will have to watch the actual story which isn’t actually that bad:
Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), is no longer working as a head of Secret Service in charge of president’s safety, after an unfortunate car accident. Eighteen months pass, and Banning now works at the Treasury Department, still close to the white house. This will come in handy when Korean terrorist decide to take the white house (secret service codename: Olympus). With the president, vice president and most of the important people taken hostage inside the white house, Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), the Speaker of the House is now the Acting President. After the entire defense force of the Olympus has been destroyed, he authorizes Mike to take out the terrorists and save the president. Is one man capable of doing such a thing, watch the movie and find out…
Not to keep you wondering too much, Mr. Butler saves the day. And now, for the second time, the things that make this movie worth watching: the fucking airplane attack scene and if you haven’t watched the trailer, you will be in for a quite a surprise. That scene really jolted me with its awesomeness and audacity. Of course, almost everything in this movie is far from realistic and we can easily say that Olympus Has Fallen would be a better fit in the fantasy section. Secondly, gun fights were quite juicy and gory, just adding to the adrenaline rush, of course if you are willing to suffer the patriotic victories later in the movie…
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Writers: Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt
Cast: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott, Melissa Leo, Angela Bassett
Fun Facts: The intruding aircraft is a modified version of the Lockheed AC-130 Gunship, initially used in the last days of the Vietnam war. In the movie it features Gatling guns on both sides of the plane, whereas the real aircraft only has air-to-ground armament on one side to strafe ground troops.
