Some seven years after the release of the claustrophobic Spanish horror La Cueva, an English-speaking remake is on the way. Titled Fall Into Darkness, it’s not a shot-for-shot remake as it will take more liberties with the story. I just hope we will get the same anal shot as we did in the original. After all, it’s absolutely crucial for the story and subsequent word-of-mouth marketing of the movie. Just consider this, if you’ve seen the movie you know exactly what I’m talking about and are probably grinning now. And if you haven’t seen the movie, you’re wondering what the fuck is an anal shot?
Fall Into Darkness follows two American backpackers as they travel to Dominican Republic in search of a good time. This search will lead them to the infamous cave and you can guess what’s going to happen next. I’m not sure I like the deviation from the original where a group of friends was on a vacation. On the other hand, the stories are quite similar, it’s just I think that the first one packed a heavier punch since they were all friends before the cave excursion.
Moving on, the cast of Fall Into Darkness is a relatively familiar one. We’ve got Nell Tiger Free of her Servant fame, Thomas Doherty and Lorenza Izzo whom you might remember from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. All three of them fit in nicely with the general vibe of the movie. Roxanne Benjamin is directing and I just hope she’ll get a better script than she did in her last movie Body at Brighton Rock. Something that I’m pretty sure will happen as the writer is David Bruckner. His movies The Ritual and The Signal were quite good and scary.
This La Cueva remake blends two familiar concepts into one. The infamous cave terrors with the vacation gone wrong subgenre. However, this project is still in early development and as Deadline reports, the filming should begin in autumn 2021. This means that the Fall Into Darkness should be released by the end of 2022. Meanwhile, you could take a look at our review of the original movie, La Cueva. Also, if you’re looking for more of the same check out The Descent, The Cave, and Sanctum. All of them feature cave exploration.
Finally, if you’re just looking to relax with some gory and easygoing horror movies featuring people on vacation gone horribly wrong we’ve got a lot of them for you. You can start with And Soon the Darkness, The Ruins, Turistas and A Perfect Getaway. These are all movies taking place in South America or some other exotically tropical destination. And if you want to really go the distance check out Green Inferno also starring Lorenza Izzo. It will get you in the right mood as it’s bloody, intense and gruesome.
