Free Guy [2021]

I’ve been keeping Free Guy handy for the last couple of days knowing that it will soon come a time for its premiere. It’s a perfect movie for drinking as all the action and funny dialogue is great at keeping your attention. My only fear was that it’s going to turn out to be a horrific mess like 6 Underground. I mean, in reality, I don’t think anyone can surpass the CIA-sponsored mess that is the above-mentioned movie. However, both of them started with over-the-top action and narration by Ryan Reynolds. Luckily, after a couple of minutes, it became clear that my fears were unfounded.

Free Guy looks and feels like you’re playing GTA Online, a video game that you can buy right now and join other players having fun in Los Santos. Earlier GTA games, namely III and IV, were the basis for the Free City. On the other hand, as someone who extensively played all of the GTA games, I would say that this movie looks more like Saints Row than anything else. I’m spending so much time here as there’s really not that much to talk about about this movie. There will be action, stunts, jokes, mind-blowing visuals, and a little bit of blood. And even a love story. Again, it eludes me as to how the fuck they managed to swing a PG-13 rating for this one, same as it did with Jungle Cruise.

While we’re dropping names, I just have to mention Ready Player One, also written by Zak Penn. It’s really similar to Free Guy with a couple of slight differences when it comes to the story. Next up we have Boss Level, a 2021 action extravaganza starring Frank Grillo. As you might have guessed from the title, that’s another video game-themed movie. To move away from the whole action thing, you might wanna take a look at Wreck-It Ralph, an adorable and very funny CGI cartoon. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention They Live, a cult classic, featuring the whole sunglasses thing. If you haven’t seen it, be sure you check it out. And if you did, it’s always good for another viewing.

Meet Guy, a bank teller living a simple life inside a video game Free City. He’s just one of the thousands of NPC’s running around the city and getting hammered by the real players playing this online game. The game was created by Soonami Games and they’re getting ready to release a sequel. However, something is about to happen that will change their plans completely.

The cast of Free Guy was pretty good, with Ryan Reynolds leading the charge along with Taika Waititi. Comer and Keery were also great and I see a great future for them. Perhaps Lil Rel Howery as Buddy stood out with his honest and natural performance. You can check him out in a more serious role in Judas and the Black Messiah. So, that’s going to be pretty much it for this one. If you’re looking for that entertaining and feel-good summer movie, you’ve found it! Lord Satan knows we need one right now. And just one more recommendation with Love and Monsters, featuring a similar vibe to this one but much more toned-down action.
