When it comes to mainstream romantic comedies, I try to avoid them as much as I can. However, A Guy Thing seemed like a casual timekiller worth checking out. Sometimes you just want to relax and watch something you don’t have to think about. Another thing that attracted me to this movie was the cast led by Jason Lee (My Name is Earl). We also have Julia Stiles and Selma Blair to spice things up. So, you already know what kind of movie this is. A simple plot, a bunch of familiar characters in trouble, and a nice little ending will leave you in a good mood.
At its core, A Guy Thing is a classic love story where a guy realizes that he loves someone else and that besides her he can be himself (wait ’till you start living together and we’ll see how that turns out for ya). However, there are enough funny gags and raunchy jokes to keep things moving. Granted. there isn’t enough R-rated humor or nudity but apparently, Jason Lee makes any movie work. And the fact that they didn’t resort to any tricks or overly sappy scenes only works to their benefit. So, if you’re in the right frame of mind, this movie might even surprise you.
Paul is getting married and we meet up with him at his bachelor party where he’s quite bored. He’s very much in love with his future wife. Even when the exotic dancers show up he doesn’t seem excited. However, he will be when he wakes up the next morning with one of them in his bed. Dazed and confused he chucks her out of the apartment and thinks nothing of it. The only problem is he seems to keep running into her everywhere he goes…
The plot of A Guy Thing reminded me of one of my favorite romantic comedies Along Came Polly. Anyone up for scuuuubaaa? And I opened by saying how I usually avoid movies like this. Tsk tsk tsk. Moving on, there’s really not much to say about this movie. Apart from the usual genre jokes, there will be a couple of weird ones. And they are the ones I liked the most. Like the whole dance instructor scene.
I wish there were more of them but what can you do. So, if you’re looking for something mildly entertaining and forgettable do check out this movie. And if you’re up for a bit of black humor, take a look at Drop Dead Sexy, also starring Jason Lee.
