A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas [2011]

Us stoners are not very demanding people, just give us some weed, familiar characters, and a couple of jokes and we’re good. A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas is a simple and effective stoner comedy. It’s the latest movie in the cult franchise and hopefully not the last. What makes this movie a bit more special is the fact it’s actually a 3D movie. Now, I don’t know how things are going to work out in the future but 3D is all the rage now. So, something like this had to happen. I can only imagine getting high and going to see this movie in the theater.

However, it works just as well if you get high and watch it at home. You can grab something to eat, go to the toilet when you want, and pause the movie if you’re laughing too hard. Some of the scenes are specially designed for this format and they might not work as well in 2D but it’s not like they’ll ruin the experience.A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas is all about that holiday atmosphere blended with copious amounts of weed and some truly bizarre mishaps. You already know what to expect so I’m not going to bother that much with the story.

I will admit that this is the weakest movie in the franchise especially when you get to those milky and overstretched scenes. To balance that out we have a bunch of new and funny characters, including Danny motherfucking Trejo and the one and only Wafflebot. All of this created a more dynamic atmosphere and helped with the pacing. I also liked the fact that this is a full-bloodied R-rated comedy. This means there will be weed but also cocaine and a lot of dirty jokes. Luckily they didn’t go PG on us and I think that this saved the whole movie.

Six years have passed since Harold and Kumar escaped Guantanamo Bay and their lives are much different now. Well, at least Harold’s is as he is now living with his wife Maria in their new house. Good old Kumar is still living the stoner life. They haven’t seen each other in a long time, but that’s about to change. An unknown person drops a package for Harold at Kumar’s place. Kumar decides to take the package to Harold’s place where everything is set for a perfect Christmas evening. As we all know, that Christmas evening is about to get less than perfect.

Silly and at times even bland, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas is just entertaining enough to warrant a viewing. And I guess most of us are in it for the nostalgia. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle holds a special place in my heart and I still watch it every few years. And laugh just like I did the first time.
