With a simple and straightforward story, Night on Earth managed to capture that cool night air vibe. You know the one I’m talking about, the one when the air is humid and aromatic. The one when anything might and does happen. The one that makes you feel alive. The night where you’re listening to Deftones song Passenger in the car and smoking a fat joint. I miss those nights… But enough about my mid-life crisis that I’ve been having since the twenties, let’s get back to this atmospheric masterpiece.
The specific style of storytelling and directing that Jim Jarmusch uses in his movies does not suit everyone. However, if you are part of the other group, then you are in for a treat. Night on Earth tells five different stories about cab drivers across the world. Each story is very engaging and represents the nature of the nation involved. Of course, for each segment top actors are recruited, and they did a phenomenal job.
As the title suggests this is a “night” movie and from the beginning of humanity, night has been associated with something bad. This trend continued and is still extremely active, where most people think that if you’re awake past midnight there’s something wrong with you. Or heavens forbid, you venture out in the night, well then, you deserve everything that might happen to you. Cab drivers have seen it all and with this invaluable experience, they interact with authority, taking us away from the established “official” system of values.
This movie can make you laugh or cry, but overall it’s one of those movies that you see alone in the middle of the night and then go to the window, light up a cigarette or drink some alcohol. You look at the people below and get that magical feeling that you are alive, that anything might happen tonight. It is that moving and good, but as I said before if you do not like these type of movies maybe you will not enjoy it as much the other guy. Enjoy in this masterpiece and remember to look out of your window during the night, stare into the sky or lights and ponder upon our existence in this night on earth.
