The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel [2011]

This movie could be about anything and still be great with actors like this. Almost all of the Britain’s finest are present and accounted for, and with some new and indigenous actors (Dev Patel, Tena Desae) they are the key to this heartwarming movie. And when I say heartwarming, I mean really heartwarming like this is the definition of the fucking word. It deals with some pretty serious subjects like death, sickness and old age (when no one gives a fuck about you) in witty and humorous way, but still maintaining that British seriousness and sometimes the cruel reality of the world we live in. Although in most of the movies we see caricature versions of foreign countries, adapted for whatever purpose the movie needs, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel portrays India and Great Britain very realistically. It shows all the good and all the bad sides, and just like in life, the truth is somewhere in the middle, if you decide to find it. With modern medical and technological centers, India has come a long way from a colony, and British are still very welcome there, along with their wallets. Many say that the target audience of this movie is elderly people, but I still enjoyed it very much, and recommend you to do the same.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a story about a group of elderly people living in that hotel, in India. This would not be so strange, but the trick is that they all used to live in England and then decided, for various reasons, to spend the last of their remaining years in the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, lured by promotional material promising a paradise. They all have different reasons to visit this exotic country, some of them are eager to return to their previous home, some are looking for rich husbands and wives and some are looking for adventure, and adventure they will find. They are greeted by their young host, the manager of the hotel Sonny Kapoor who has a set of problems of his own, most of them are related to a current state of the hotel… In the end, whatever problems we have, if someone is there to listen and give advice and support they are very much solvable…
