Sometimes the title tells you everything you need to know about the movie you’re about to watch. Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a mildly raunchy sex comedy with a bit of romance and an excellent cast. First of all, it’s directed and written by none other than Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma)! He has been trying to shoot a movie about porn since the nineties and his experience with Mallrats. This means you can expect excellent dialogue and a vibrant atmosphere, just like in his other movies. The subject is a controversial one but I assure you it’s handled with care and compassion.
Starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a great movie. Clever and witty, it also has a pretty strong and interesting main story. Of course, anything related to sex has quite the appeal. I mean, I think all of us have considered the occupation at some point in our lives. It’s the pressure of performance, at least for me, if we’re talking about reasons why I’m not banking making porn. The only problem that I would list is the cheesy love story that sort of underlines the whole movie.
If you are going this far, you should go all the way and make something fucked up and not the classic movie screen ending for an average viewer, yuck, it looks too commercial. More in line with Chasing Amy than with his other movies. I also have to admit that I’m slowly but surely falling in love with Elizabeth Banks. There’s something so magnetic about her that makes her simply irresistible. And I’ve already fallen for my brother stoner Rogen a long time ago.
Life is pretty hard (or pretty easy, depending on your perception) for Zack Brown and Miri Linky. They are barely making ends meet, working menial jobs, and trying to stay above water. When they lose the electricity in their apartment, they know it’s time to take drastic action. And an old friend who just happens to be a porn producer has an idea. An idea that could help them make a lot of money.
With a robust supporting cast, featuring Jason Mewes, Craig Robinson, Justin Long, and fucking Tracy Lords, Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a movie that will keep your attention and make you laugh at the same time. The main story is a source of endless jokes and gags, with two average humans trying to make a porno movie. I am certain that this is not the first movie that exploits this subject. But I am also certain that there will be much more of them coming in the future. If you’re looking for similar movies, the British sex comedy I Want Candy starring Carmen Electra is a good choice.
That’s a more straightforward story of two guys making a porno movie. Zack and Miri is basically using the controversial porno gimmick to tell a love story. A love story that feels a bit different than others because this couple has been best friends for years and years. It also reignites the age-old question of whether “real” friendships between men and women can exist. And I also liked the fact that all the characters are struggling financially. They’re ordinary people, just like me and you which makes them more relatable. Did you ever ask yourself if would you do something like this?
Finally, I simply cannot miss this opportunity to talk about the current state of affairs in our society. I know that Zack and Miri Make a Porno is this lighthearted comedy but it illuminates a broader issue we have to talk about. And that’s the fact that the average American simply cannot make ends meet in this late-stage capitalist society. The society born out of the chasm that is the tribal system of values which instructs us to say fuck those losers when we see people struggling. I dare not to continue this rant because my blood pressure is going to explode.
