I think that a more appropriate title for this movie is Difficult Truth and not A Dark Truth. Mostly because the movie itself is quite difficult. If you ever wondered how great ideas and concepts can be turned into a below-average movie here’s your answer. But wait, you just said that the movie is below average, how can it be worth watching? Well, the reason for that is its subject and the awareness it raises. Corporations with only one goal in their mind, dictatorships, and evil men with also just one goal. All these players need to be called out. Victims, not just foreign, but also domestic, and the impending doom that awaits us all if something doesn’t change.
You might say that this is all leftist propaganda but the fact is that these things are happening all around the world. You just don’t know it. The media would rather cover the latest scandal involving Kardashians than report on these problems. And in case you already know what’s going on, it’s always a good idea to get a different perspective. And unlike the real world where most of the radio host peddling conspiracy theorist are right wing oriented, it’s about time we got a leftie one. They’re all transitioning to podcasts now but I think that their aging audience won’t follow them there.
Jack Begosian is an ex-CIA agent, now living in Canada and hosting a radio show called The Truth. In it, he tries to inform the people about the real problems that the mainstream media keeps avoiding while facing problems in his own family with his son and wife. At the same time, in a small Ecuadorian city, there’s an outbreak of a terrible disease because their water filtration system malfunctioned. The corporation ClearBak, responsible for the faulty system is on a verge of signing a multi-billion deal and that kind of publicity would kill the deal. This is where these two stories intertwine with Jack in the middle.
A Dark Truth features a good plot and a phenomenal cast for a movie of this size. And you would think that all this would equate to a better flick. This is why you and I aren’t making movies. We might have good ideas and the best of intentions. However, when it comes to execution, we would suck. On paper, almost all of the characters are credible and intriguing. We have an ex-CIA agent with baggage and trouble at home, brother-sister dynamics, but all this rarely shows up in the movie. The production values are at least really good so the movie looks really good. If any of these subjects interest you, check out this flawed thriller. And if not, perhaps you should skip it. Finally, you might wanna check out other similar movies like Dark Waters, Spotlight, and Official Secrets.
