Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse [2015] Movie Review Recommendation

Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse [2015]

If you were wondering what movie you should watch on those special days when you need to watch something great, gory and hilarious, wonder no more, Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is here! This is another horror-comedy, this time with zombies and its vibe is similar to Zombieland, although this is a much raunchier affair. The jokes are hilarious, gags extremely funny and don’t get me started with all the nice gore, often used in gags. This is an instant cult classic and I hope they are thinking about sequels because the cast got this crazy chemistry going on. This movie just grabs you and it doesn’t let go.

And when it does you want fucking more! Yes, the characters and the whole plot is a bit generic, when looked at mathematically, but this will not bother you unless you’re looking for things to bitch about. This is one of those straight-to-the-vault movies, that you should always keep ready because you never know when you might need it. With the running time of just ninety minutes, the pacing was spot on and the movie never felt boring or dragged out. It’s definitely much better than Freaks of Nature [2015] that’s zanier although both movies are pretty entertaining and feature a similar style.

Ben, Carter, and Augie are three best friends who also happen to be amazing scouts. Their scout leader Rogers says so. Now they are trying to recruit new scouts, although this is a rather difficult task since in the previous years no one decided to join their ranks. Actually Ben and Carter are thinking about leaving them, and the only reason they stayed all this time is Augie, who’s having a big initiation ceremony tonight. The only problem is that Ben and Carter got invited to Senior Party earlier in the day. Well, that’s not the only problem…

To further elaborate on that generic aspect, I have to say that once you see them in motion, they are just perfect heroes or anti-heroes. They are so lovable and cute that you simply cannot hold anything against them. I’m already imagining kids who will catch this movie during their teens, in a couple of years, and who will absolutely love it (or I hope so). This can be their generational horror-comedy, much like other cult movies were for us and those who came before us. And before I start talking about the origins of life and the universe, I must say a couple more things about this masterpiece.

Not only this is a zombie comedy, but also an adventure/teen movie with all the usual elements of friendship, love, and other crap. Another amazing thing is that the movie actually speaks to today’s generation. Featuring selfies and all the other crap that’s been around for a couple of years, Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse seamlessly integrated them and created a synergy that resonates with care, love, and passion. It also cleverly used the whole scout thing to anchor the story and draw in older viewers.

We can draw parallels between this new, modern world we live in and how distanced we are from the way of life not just from a hundred years ago but also from only a couple of decades ago. We lost touch with the basic survival skills with most of the population living in cities and the zombie apocalypse is a stark reminder that these skills can be very useful. Unless you’re planning on hunkering down in some bunker, waiting for the whole thing to blow over. A valid approach, so kudos to you my friend, I was thinking the same thing. All I need now is a bunker and some sort of an apocalypse…
