Scream VI 2023 Movie Scene Ghostface Killer wearing his mask and holding a shotgun pointed at the screen

Scream VI [2023]

Flying high on the popularity and praise received for the previous Scream movie, they’ve gone and fucked up this one. Scream VI is a slasher horror movie that feels disjointed, silly, and tensionless. Not only does the whole meta thing comes off as pretentious but the same goes for the script. I really don’t know where they were going with it. The whole thing can be best described as delusions of grandeur exemplified by the running time of two hours. And what pisses me off the most are the fake reviews. You can spot them from a mile away as they keep praising aspects of the movie that are demonstrably bad.

Still, if you have nothing better to do, I guess Scream VI is a movie worth watching. It’s best viewed as a forgettable distraction, especially if you’re feeling nostalgic about the franchise. Featuring a budget of $35 million, it looks and sounds great. The production values are high and the cast did their best with these generic characters. And I’m glad Spitfire jackets are making a comeback. The movie is eye candy, you have to give it that. You can expect a bunch of twists, narrow escapes, and brutal murders. However, the thing I hated the most about this movie was the utter disregard for reality.

People will get stabbed numerous times and then just get up and walk away. Sam will miss the killer from point-blank range but then put one right between his eyes just ten minutes later. And I don’t consider this a spoiler as you already know what’s going on in these movies. I am so fucking over this Ghostface Killer and all the other buzzwords. Woodsboro this, Woodsboro that, and on top of that we have Gale and Sidney. I did not care about a single character in this movie. Which is hilarious since I did care about them just a year ago in Scream 2022 edition. I also gave up figuring out who the killer is right away.

After surviving the vicious attacks of the masked killer a year ago, Sam and Tara are now living in New York and trying to move on with their lives. Sam is going to therapy and Tara is trying to live a normal college life. However, it doesn’t take long before they become targets yet again as the Ghostface killer resurfaces to finish the job. You would think that since they have their own posse now, the killer is not going to stand a chance. But you would be wrong as all of these people are now targets.

There are a number of recent slashers that are much better than Scream VI. I’m talking about movies like SickSissy, and even Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. Each of them offers a streamlined and entertaining slasher experience. And since we have Samara Weaving in the opening scene, I also have to mention The Babysitter. Of course, the big question is where does this franchise go from here? And if you’re thinking that they’re going to stop, think again. And look at the box office returns. The movie made more than $170 million which means that we’re certainly getting Scream VII.

Just in case the people who will be making the next one are reading this, here’s an idea for the story. I mean, it’s quite an obvious one with the reversal of the roles. Sam and her immortal sister are now hunting the killer and taunting him to the point that you feel sorry for him. You can always go over the top with the gore as you cannot escape the R rating. Keep things tight, bloody, and moving. No mystery, no meta bullshit, just pure unadulterated bloodbath.
