Previously known as Town Creek, Blood Creek is a highly underrated horror movie with stylish visuals and an original story. First of all, I have to say that Blood Creek does sound much better and it fits the story perfectly. And while there are some pretentious vibes, what you’re about to see here feels different than your usual horror experience. Special effects and action sequences are very good, and the movie has that cool, almost comic-like visual style.
If I told you that Blood Creek is directed by Joel Schumacher you probably would believe me. After all, Joel is behind some dark movies like 8MM, The Lost Boys and Flatlines. Although, this is his first genuine horror movie. However, if I told you that both Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender are starring, you probably wouldn’t believe me. Especially when you consider the fact that this isn’t some big production but more of an indie effort.
This doesn’t mean that the movie is bad because it most certainly is not. Since the story is mostly taking place on a small and remote farm, the budget could be spent elsewhere. Speaking of the story, it has a lot of potent ingredients but it could’ve used a rewrite or two. Nazi experiments, Vikings, Satanism, supernatural and finally, the clash between good and evil all somehow make their way into Blood Creek.
After his brother went missing, Evan Marshal has tried to lead a normal life. He works as a paramedic and his job is stressful enough. Plus, he has to take care of his elderly father. However, one night his brother Victor just shows and asks him to join him on a mission. Mission to defeat an ancient evil that threatens the entire world.
Blood Creek reminded me of the eighties horror movies that were slightly over-the-top but still sleek and engaging. The only difference is that they took the whole very seriously unlike their eighties counterparts that also added a layer of humor. Something like Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight but without the jokes. However, you can bet your ass there’s going to be some freaky stuff here. Even zombie stuff.
I also wish they further developed all of the elements we were talking about earlier. This could have been a beginning of a nice franchise. Especially when you consider just how nasty and imposing the main villain feels like. What we got, in the end, is a pretty shallow but still very entertaining horror movie bound to keep your attention for ninety minutes.
