Dark Skies [2013] Movie Review Recommendation

Dark Skies [2013]

I am getting real tired of these haunting movies, but wait this isn’t a haunting movie but a full blown science fiction and horror crossover! Oh yeah, baby, but wait, it feels like a haunting movie… Well fuck it. Dark Skies is actually a mixture of all these genres and ultimately a pretty scary movie with eerie atmosphere and very good acting, especially from the younger part of the cast. The thing that is the main feature of this movie is its seriousness. Everybody took everything seriously, without any hesitation and bias, and subsequently, the viewer too, gets pulled into this warped world where the fear is real. Directed by Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) who directed two relatively crappy movies with good visuals, Dark Skies turned the things around and concentrated on the story, making this movie a must see in its class.

Dark Skies PosterThe Barret family has seen better days. Daniel Barret, his wife Lacy and their two sons are having financial problems and on top of that Daniel hasn’t been able to get a job for three months. This has increased tension in their marriage, testing it but this is only the beginning of the problems. Soon strange things will start to happen in the house, ordinary household objects are found stacked together in complex structures. Noises and the footsteps are only increasing the strain on the whole family, but when they actually see that someone might be visiting them…

Lately I have seen a lot of movies with a phenomenal atmosphere and Dark Skies excels at that haunting and frightening vibe that just makes you wanna jump off your bed. That feeling of hopelessness and the utter inability in a face of a foe much more superior than you is something that will stick with you after the movie is long over. If you get over the formulaic setting of a family in an old house trying to stay together against all odds, you will be rewarded with one of the best indie sci-fi movies this year. The relatively slow pace dissolves in a great atmosphere so give it a chance…
