Timecrimes 2007 Movie Scene Karra Elejalde as Héctor watching his neighbors through his binoculars with Candela Fernández as Clara

Los Cronocrímenes AKA Timecrimes [2007]

Sometimes, just sometimes, a movie is so good that you actually have to pause to admire its beauty. Timecrimes is one of those movies, and since it deals in time travel we have the usual paradoxes. However, they’re not as simplistic as those featured in mainstream movies. Well thought out and a bit harder to comprehend they will make think. And before you know it, you’ll be fully immersed in the story.

We follow an average guy who comes home from work and sees something quite odd. I have to leave it at that because the less you know about Timecrimes the better. This is a potent blend of science fiction, horror, and mystery. And there’s even some humor sprinkled on top of this gorgeous Spanish cake. The dialogues and camera work are so good you’ll feel that everything you see is of some importance. After all, this is a time travel movie so clues could be everywhere.

I do not want to frighten you with all these things but hopefully, entice you to check out the movie. This is not some pretentious and convoluted indie experience but a true masterpiece. A masterpiece that’s perfectly paced and knows exactly when you need another shot of adrenaline. This is where we come to the horror aspect as Timecrimes is actually quite a dark movie. And a voyeuristic one as well.

Hector, an ordinary working man, and his wife Clara have just moved into their new house, located outside the city in a beautiful scenic landscape filled with trees and green fields. Tired after a hard day at work, Hector relaxes by watching the forest with his binoculars, and perhaps, just perhaps spying on the neighbors a bit. Then suddenly he sees a beautiful young woman taking off her shirt in the middle of the woods, but she quickly vanishes in the trees. And Hector decides to investigate.

Proving that you do not need CGI to make a fantastic science fiction movie Los Cronocrímenes with its superb screenplay, excellent acting and lastly a thought-provoking plot is a must-see. I must admit that at some point in the movie I had to pause it and draw on a piece of paper different paths, events, and characters in order to try to wrap my head around the story. This is no Time Machine, that’s for sure. It’s more similar to another indie effort, Primer from 2004. And you can always check out our selection of Time Travel Movies.
