Men in Black 3 [2012]

Men in Black 3 is another reboot of successful nineties movies that are hitting the cinemas this summer. I haven’t seen any trailers or posters for MiB 3, just diving into the experience, and right of the bat I have to say that they didn’t fuck it up. J and K are here, I kinda miss Linda Fiorentino and Rip Torn, but we have Emma Thompson and Josh Brolin to replace them. A special credit goes to Michael Stuhlbarg AKA Griffin who in my opinion stole the show from all the other supporting roles. As for the story, it is pretty good, again it’s a save-the-world scenario spiced up with time travel and other shit, but the most important thing is that there are a lot of weird aliens. That is what fascinated me throughout the trilogy, those strange creatures that J and K have to fight, so creative and realistic that it feels that the story from the movie might be true. I just loved the way they explode when shot, it is such a juicy and tasty effect that I wouldn’t mind if that was the entire movie. There are a lot of laughs, well placed and not too aggressive, just subtle gags in a style of the first two parts.

This time the villain is Boris The Animal (It’s just Boris! (It just had to be some Russian name)), a rather unpleasant looking Boglodyte with a knack for fast bikes and hot chicks. Although I really liked Boris, I think that they could have done more with his character script and special effect wise. Maybe this is due to the magnificent performance by Vincent D’Onofrio (Sugar, I need sugar!) in the first part. Brolin was spot on with his young K performance, and this cements his place in my entrance to the hall of fame, a long journey he started with The Goonies and continued with No Country for Old Men.

And now something about the plot: Boris The Animal (It’s just Boris!), a last member of the Boglodyte species escapes the maximum security prison on the moon and travels back to earth in an effort to travel back in time. Armless and restless, he has dreamed about an opportunity where he could change the past and prevent young agent K from shooting his arm off and also stopping the incoming Boglodyte invasion. In the meantime, K and J are up to their usual routine, grilling aliens and neurolizing the genpop. One day agent J wakes up as any other day and heads off to work, only to find that no one has ever heard of agent K, but agent O who replaced poor Zed who died in the meantime, might shed some light on that matter.

Fun Facts: This is Will Smith’s first film in 3.5 years, since the release of Seven Pounds in December 2008. This is the longest he has gone without appearing in a movie since his film career started in 1993. Also Michael Bay expressed interest in directing, and thank the universe that he didn’t get to “transform” it into CGI jerk-o-matic…
